The event will be held at Centre for Cross-disciplinary Research in Environmental Technologies (CRETUS), Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, Spain.

Objective, Scope and Participation

This workshop contributes to the objectives of WG2 on technological solutions to detect and prevent illegal archaeological excavations within COST Action CA24119 (CPP4ALL).

The overwhelming number of archaeological sites documented represents an enormous challenge in management, as protecting everything, all the time, and effectively is virtually impossible. Regulations and planning have been the first firewall against looting. However, over the years, different technologies have been developed to address this issue, from simple measures like fences, cameras and alarms, or in situ guards 24/7, to the use of new technologies for remote monitoring, preventive modelling or activity detection and quick response. WG2 is mapping all these technological solutions to assess their implementation and efficacy and will try to identify those with better results or potential. During this first workshop we aim at sharing examples (8-10) of current or developing technologies that can help to advance in the protection of archaeological sites. Particularly, we are interested in pitch talks on new technologies, assessments of current technologies/solutions (either in specific sites, or generally), and more general overviews of the current situation (with a critical approach). To foster inter-WG synergies, contributions on how regulations (WG1) or provenance research (WG3) can be complementary resources to achieve the final goal (a better protection of archaeological sites) are also welcome.

The workshop will be divided in two parts: first, we will share the contributions of the participants, and later, we will discuss the data of the surveys to advance in the draft of our report (SoA and gap identification). The workshop will therefore contribute to the preparation of our first deliverable and set the basis for the next steps of our working group. While only 8 to 10 people can be invited in person through the Action’s funding, the workshop will be hybrid and participation of other members, especially in the second part, is encouraged.

The workshop is open to all members of WG 2. Participation costs are financed in accordance with the e-COST regulations.
