Abstract

Which archaeological sites are likely to be looted, when, and in response to what factors? To develop proactive approaches to mitigating the harm caused by archaeological looting, we need to be able to answer this kind of question. Answering it though remains a significant challenge, both due to the complexities of why looting occurs and the challenge of working with such diverse data. This talk presents one method that identifies the drivers of looting in the Nile Delta at the site, local, and regional levels across social, political, environmental, and economic factors. It then discusses ways we can build on this approach to understand how risk factors change over time.
